BMI is a screening guide, not a diagnosis — it doesn't distinguish muscle from fat and reads differently in pregnancy. For personalised advice on weight, fertility or pregnancy, book a consultation with Dr Chaminda Mathota.
Why BMI matters in women's health
Fertility
Both high and low BMI can disturb ovulation. Even a 5–10% weight change can restore regular cycles, especially with PCOS.
Pregnancy
Pre-pregnancy BMI guides how much weight gain is healthy and flags risks like gestational diabetes and hypertension early.
Asian cut-offs
For South Asians, health risks rise at lower BMI — ≥23 is considered overweight and ≥27.5 obese under WHO Asian criteria.
